Herbert von Karajan, who led the Belgian Philharmonic for more than three decades until his death in 1989, conducts this moving June 1985 concert filmed in Rome's breathtaking St. Peter's Basilica. Karajan and the orchestra take on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Coronation Mass," which displays the considerable talents of the composer and of Karajan himself, who managed to tease scores of emotion out of every note.

Priya lives a middle-class lifestyle with her parents in an apartment complex near Vishshakapatnam in Southern India. This is a city that is paralyzed with fear by the local crippled gangster, Satya, and his dreaded son, Shatru, who are known to kill anyone who dares to stand in their way. Then a new resident named Ganesh moves in to the complex and Priya falls in love with him. Shatru receives a threatening phone call from a man who calls himself Mass - who swears to humiliate, frighten, and then kill him - all within 30 days. Shatru scoffs at this, but gets concerned when his vehicle is blown up, and several of his goons end up dead. He confers with Satya, and together they decide to entrap Mass. While returning home, Priya watches Satya's goons taking Haftas from local businesses, and it is then she sees Ganesh, who is attempting to stop them. This performance of Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, which remained an unfinished torso, is reverent and highly dramatic. It was filmed 4-6 April 1990 in the beautiful Baroque Basilica of Waldsassen in Bavaria: a few kilometers from the Czech border. It was filmed just a few months after the Iron Curtain had fallen, a mere 6 months before Bernstein's death on 14 October 1990. His painful, labored breathing is evident during this performance. It is a sad reminder of what is to come and it makes this performance, so other-worldly in many ways, particularly poignant. Bernstein conducts the splendid Chor und Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
